Waste Collection and Treatment Systems

The course Waste Collection and Treatment Systems covers the safe management of laboratory waste, starting with segregation and storage at the source, using appropriate containers and respecting chemical incompatibilities to prevent accidents.
During collection, materials are separated by hazard level and labeled correctly (e.g., amber glass for flammables, polyethylene for acids). Internal treatment prioritizes hazard reduction and reuse, including neutralization of acids and bases, precipitation of heavy metals, and distillation to recover organic solvents (ethanol, hexane), reducing effluents and costs.
When internal reuse is exhausted, waste is sent to licensed companies for environmentally adequate final disposal, by methods such as controlled incineration, co-processing in cement kilns, or Class I industrial landfills.
