The course Waste Classification and Characterization covers the management of laboratory waste under Brazil's National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) and technical standards such as ABNT NBR 10,004. Waste includes solid, semi-solid, and liquid materials discarded in human activities, originating from physical-chemical analyses, synthesis, solution preparation, and disposal of degraded reagents.
The course teaches risk classification: Class I (hazardous: flammable, corrosive, reactive, toxic, or pathogenic), Class II A (non-hazardous, non-inert), and Class II B (non-hazardous, inert). Most chemical laboratory waste is Class I, requiring special attention to heavy metals and organic solvents.
Source segregation, knowledge of chemical composition, and the application of the PNRS hierarchy — non-generation, minimization, reuse, treatment, and final disposal — are emphasized. The professional must act with ethical and legal responsibility, planning experiments and applying Green Chemistry principles to reduce environmental impacts.
