Techniques for Organizing Space, Flow, and Work

In this course, students will understand the importance of work organization for industrial success, learning how to strategically integrate physical space, people, and production processes. The focus is on maximizing productivity, operational efficiency, and worker well-being, using resources intelligently, reducing waste, and maintaining quality and safety.

Different types of layout will be explored — by process, product, cellular, and fixed position — showing how the arrangement of machines, people, and materials directly impacts production flow, communication, and the movement of resources. In addition, the module addresses material and people flows, the study of times and methods, and the elimination of waste, using tools such as flowcharts, spaghetti diagrams, and value stream mapping.

The course also highlights ergonomics, workplace safety, and the human factor as central to productivity, showing how well-adapted environments promote quality of life and performance. Finally, it presents practical execution through Production Planning, Scheduling, and Control (PPC), including demand forecasting, strategic planning, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement, ensuring efficient and sustainable operations.
