The course Basic Communication in the Professional Context (Instrumental English) focuses on developing reading competence and the accurate interpretation of technical texts, manuals, and international standards, which are essential for occupational safety technicians to work efficiently and safely. The discipline does not aim at verbal fluency, but rather at the ability to extract critical information quickly, safely, and contextually.

The content covers the decoding of basic structures, such as alphabets, numerals, and the verb there to be, as well as the understanding of verb tenses, including Simple Present, Present Continuous, Simple Past, and Simple Future, which indicate operations, warnings, or past and future events. The course also teaches students to identify the communicative intention of affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences, and to interpret infinitives and gerunds applied to safety instructions.

In addition, the course addresses the use of jargon, phrasal verbs, and idiomatic expressions from the industrial environment, such as Safety first, By the book, and Down time, as well as the identification of false cognates, such as HAZARD, PUSH, and EVENTUALLY, which may compromise safety. Through these techniques, professionals learn to “unlock” international communication, ensuring that standards, instructions, and warnings are correctly understood and applied in the globalized workplace.
