Approach to Production Management Systems (JIT, MRP, and OPT)

In this course, students will understand the objectives of production management systems, which provide philosophies and tools to plan, organize, and control manufacturing processes, ensuring efficient resource use, cost reduction, and competitiveness. Three main approaches will be presented: Just-in-Time (JIT), Material Requirements Planning (MRP), and Optimized Production Technology (OPT), each focused on meeting market demand strategically. JIT, created by Toyota, emphasizes pull production driven by real customer demand, pursuing zero defects, zero inventory, and zero waste, promoting flexibility and quality, but requiring rigorous planning and reliable suppliers.

MRP is a computerized system that plans what to produce or buy, how much, and when, using the Master Production Schedule, Bill of Materials, and Inventory Records to synchronize production and purchasing orders. OPT, based on Goldratt's Theory of Constraints, focuses on identifying and exploiting production bottlenecks, using the Drum-Buffer-Rope method to optimize flow and increase the capacity of critical resources.

The course also highlights that these approaches can be combined in practice, allowing leading companies to adapt the strengths of each system according to their operational needs, maximizing efficiency and control across the entire production line.
